Apply for Outreach

***NOTE: Unfortunately, this opportunity is NO LONGER AVAILABLE. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.***

Are you an educator or youth group leader interested in sharing the excitement of astronomy and planetary science with your students?  From this page, you can submit a request to have volunteers visit your school or apply to bring your class to UCLA.  Our outreach events include hands-on activities for all ages ranging from building bottle rockets to gazing through solar telescopes.

Our list of outreach activities details the hands-on science demos that can be brought to your classroom.  For more specific information about any of these activities, please contact .

Please note that while we do our best to accommodate requests, filling out an application does not guarantee we will be able to send volunteers, as we receive many more applications than we have time to accept.  Check out our application tips to learn what will help make your outreach request successful.  Priority will be given to applications received at least 60 days before the event.

To apply for an outreach event at your school or a UCLA visit for you class, fill out the Outreach Event Application Form.  The application will ask for your preferred date/time as well as your preferred outreach activity.  Visit the outreach availability calendar to view dates that are unavailable and the list of outreach activities to select an activity that is appropriate for your grade level.

Our committee meets on the first Wednesday of each month to schedule upcoming outreach visits.  To learn more about these monthly deadlines and how to make sure your application is considered during that meeting, click here.

Please note that if you apply for an outreach event and are selected, you are agreeing to allow iPLEX volunteers and staff to photograph or film all participants for non-profit use on our website and in our newsletter.  If your school, school district, or organization requires media consent forms to be signed by the parents of participants under 18 years of age, you take responsibility for distributing and collecting the signed forms prior to the event and giving them to an iPLEX representative for our records.  Contact iPLEX at with any questions or concerns – we are happy to work with you and your school to satisfy any legal requirements.

Outreach visits are sponsored by a collaboration between the UCLA Institute for Planets and Exoplanets, AstronomyLive!, the Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences, the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences.
