We wish we could accommodate every request we receive for an outreach visit, but unfortunately we can only accept a fraction of the applications we receive due to time constraints. Below are some helpful tips on how to make it easy for us to accept your request:
- Apply Early – The earlier you request an outreach event, the better. We recommend submitting your application at least 60 days before your event, but priority will be given on a first-come first-served basis so even earlier is better. Be aware that we have a deadline each month after which no applications will be considered until the following month. Learn more about the monthly deadlines.
- Be Flexible – Instead of requesting a specific date, give us a range of options. That way we will have a better chance of making the scheduling work out. Also, instead of requesting only one activity, select several activities. That way, you’ll have a better chance of us finding volunteers with experience in those activities to visit your school.
- Be Specific – The more details you can offer us about how many participants there will be at your event and their age levels, the better we will be able to prepare for your event and determine whether we have enough volunteers. Don’t forget to include detailed contact information as well as descriptions of the event location and parking. Also, if you are looking for us to teach your students a specific concept, please let us know, as we can often tailor individual lessons.
- Be Inclusive – In an effort to serve as many people as possible, we may place priority on events that involve larger groups of students or students from underrepresented groups in STEM areas. If your school has a diverse student body, please let us know. If you have a small group of students, consider inviting other student groups or classrooms to join in. For example, consider inviting multiple homeschool groups or girl scout troops to include a larger number of participants.
