Connecting Theory to Experiments in GAFD 2013

June 26th - 28th, 2013 at UCLA

The UCLA Institute for Planets and Exoplanets (iPLEX) invites you to participate in a three-day workshop in June 2013 entitled “Connecting Theory to Experiments in Geophysical and Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics (GAFD)”.

Researchers in the field of Geophysical and Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics (GAFD) attempt to answer questions spanning topics from  weather and climate, to magnetism in planets and stars, to flow in oceans, atmospheres and metallic cores. The aim of this workshop is to bring together theorists and experimentalists to discuss the capabilities and limits of each approach and how the two may benefit from one another.  The workshop will provide access to one of the nation’s leading GAFD laboratories, the SPINLab at UCLA, where theorists and experimentalists alike can discuss opportunities for the synergistic merging of theory and laboratory experiment to answer open GAFD questions.

The workshop will be held in the SPINLab on the 5th floor of the Geology building and Slichter Hall 3853 on the UCLA campus June 26-28, 2013. The first day of the workshop will consist of a hands-on workshop in the SPINLab, while the second two days of the workshop will consist of a set of 30-minute invited and contributed talks interspersed with discussions.
