{"id":7208,"date":"2013-07-02T13:34:34","date_gmt":"2013-07-02T20:34:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/planets.ucla.edu\/?p=7208"},"modified":"2021-01-18T01:36:12","modified_gmt":"2021-01-18T09:36:12","slug":"fluid-dynamics-workshop-merges-theory-and-experiment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/planets.ucla.edu\/?p=7208","title":{"rendered":"Fluid dynamics workshop merges theory and experiment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over two dozen scientists from thirteen different institutions and four countries visited UCLA June 26-28, 2013 for a hands-on workshop entitled \u201cConnecting Theory to Experiments in Geophysical and Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics (GAFD).\u201d\u00a0 The <a title=\"Connecting Theory to Experiments in GAFD 2013\" href=\"http:\/\/planets.ucla.edu\/meetings\/gafd\/\">three-day interdisciplinary workshop<\/a>, sponsored by the UCLA Institute for Planets and Exoplanets (iPLEX) and Professor Jonathan Aurnou\u2019s SPINLab, brought theorists and experimentalists together to discuss how to integrate their respective techniques and answer key questions in the field of fluid dynamics.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers discussed fluid flow in oceans, atmospheres, and the metallic cores of planets.\u00a0 These topics have applications ranging from weather and climate on Earth and other planets to magnetism in planets and stars.<\/p>\n<p>UCLA scientists showcased the unique fluid dynamics experiments underway at SPINLAB through interactive lab tutorial sessions.\u00a0 Workshop attendees examined SPINLab\u2019s rotating magnetic convection device (RoMag) and conducted basic experiments on spinning fluids with tanks mounted on turntables.<\/p>\n<p>Learn more about UCLA fluid dynamics research on the <a href=\"http:\/\/spinlab.ess.ucla.edu\/\">SPINLab website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Research at the SPINLab was recently featured in the annual <a title=\"iPLEX newsletter highlights planetary research at UCLA\" href=\"http:\/\/planets.ucla.edu\/news\/the-first-annual-iplex-newsletter-highlights-planetary-research-at-ucla\/\">iPLEX magazine<\/a>.\u00a0 Read the story <a title=\"UCLA laboratory puts a spin on fluid dynamics\" href=\"http:\/\/planets.ucla.edu\/news\/ucla-laboratory-puts-a-spin-on-fluid-dynamics\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>[tabs slidertype=&#8221;images&#8221;
